Thoughts of soup might not be first in one's mind during the summer. But those who love Asian food know any time is a good time for high quality Chinese noodle soup. And the best selling point? They are filling and inexpensive.
One such soup can be found at Junly's China Hut, 4123 Portage, a small, often-passed-by restaurant on Kalamazoo's east side. The restaurant specializes in Indonesian and Chinese fare and so the soups available are much more than the familiar egg drop kind.
For an introduction to the soups, try the Pork Noodle Soup with Chinese Pickles ($6.95). The broth is a combination of pork and chicken stocks as the chef likes to mix them for this dish to get a special flavor.
The soup has a pleasing sweet and sour flavor with a salty dimension, a signature taste profile of the best of Chinese soups. It is made with Chinese radish as well as a host of other vegetables. The pork in it is cut fine.
The dish is enough for a meal and is good purchased for take-out and warmed up at home. Other soups to look for include the Indonesian Chicken soup ($6.95), which has diced potatoes, carrots, sliced cabbage, diced chicken with Mung bean noodles, and the spicy Autumn Soup ($6.95), which is made with chicken, tofu, onion and coconut milk.
