Shark fins are one of the most cruel animal products, in which sharks are caught alive, their fins cut off and then thrown back into the ocean while still alive. Anybody can imagine the extreme pain this animal must feel tossed back in the ocean with its limbs cut off, and since it is not a deadly wound, the shark probably dies of starvation after many days of pain and agony.
Not only are shark fins comparable with other extreme cruelties like boiling cats alive for soup, which is a common practice in Korea, but also the massive and growing demand for shark fins in Asian countries means sharks are overfished. Many shark populations have been decimated and shark species are rapidly becoming endangered, and so far, with little legal protection.
The shark fin problem is recognised and respected by companies such as Disney, which has banned shark fins in its Disneyland Hotel in Hong Kong.
